While bringing the camera close to your character is one of the biggest changes Helldivers 2 makes from the original, a feature that remains very much the same is friendly fire. If a teammate steps in the path of your own bullet barrage or laser beam, or is caught up in a missile strike, they'll sustain damage and could die. This is treated as a pretty important feature in the Arrowhead Studios follow-up, and it can't be turned off.
The Swedish developer considers friendly fire a "central thread" that runs through many of its titles, and in the case of Helldivers 2, it's all about leaning into the comedy value. "It enhances the satire and that feeling of unpredictability and chaos. It's also a thing about mastery," said assistant game director Sagar Beroshi. "We want you to have moments where you're like: 'I was trying to get rid of this big scary robot, but instead I shot a big orbital barrage right over where you were standing.'"
Whenever that happens during playtests, Beroshi states it's always a laugh that follows rather than annoyance. "We don't want death to feel like a vast loss. In the universe, Super Earth doesn't care about your lives enough. They are just throwing human bodies into the meat grinder. So it also supports the satire. Like this idea that you work for a society that you have been brainwashed into perfectly and wonderfully loving, and yet this is how it treats its soldiers."
Luckily, each mission in Helldivers 2 has you packing with plenty of revives, so if your fellow player does get caught up in your weapon's fire, they can be brought back — the levels we played during our preview session each had roughly 20 revive tokens for the team of four to use. Will you make sure your friends "accidentally" get caught in your line of fire? Kill them off in the comments below.

The only thing I can offer is to say "get out of my way"...
I didn’t really have much interest in this title, but I like what I’m hearing about the team’s approach to the game. I’m genuinely looking forward to reading the reviews for this one because it sounds like it could be a lot of fun. I’m sort of craving multiplayer gaming fun right now and, for some reason, the game seems to be generating a quiet type of hype that is piquing my interest. I do wish this one would have a trial because I suspect that this is a game that would benefit from having one… especially in this February, which is a month where I sort of want to buy everything!
I just hope it doesn't turn into a trollfest.
@matekomlosi Continue dreaming...
@matekomlosi Friendly fire was in the first helldivers, and I don't remember having any issue with trolls taking advantage of the friendly fire... But this was 2015, so things were different then.
Thats fun and crazy at the same time.word up son
I genuinely just want to see someone get hit by an airdrop. The moment I saw it in the trailers I knew that there are gonna be some funny moments in this game
@AverageGamer yeah, things are different now. I didn't play the first installment but I'm planning on this one. I hope they at least limit the friendly fire count like in COD hardcore mode. I know, maybe I lost my hope in humanity but I don't want to ragequit when some idiots decide to play a nutrun...
The friendly fire adds a lot of laughs to the game, but also a lot of annoyance. That is the part I am least looking forward to, honestly.
I feel bad for my teammates because there is no way in hell I'm not killing them by accident. I look forward to playing it this week.
So you're throwing the friendly fire card at me?
Well then, let me counter it by having no friends. Who's laughing now?
When is the review embargo? Anyone know?
@IAmAshCohen17 Tuesday 17:00 GMT(that’s 12:00 ET I believe)
Edit: apparently this isn’t a confirmed time, just as “estimated time” whatever the hell that means. Probably nonsense then.
@IAmAshCohen17 @ChrisDeku Review code hasn't gone out to any outlets yet, including us.
@LiamCroft Is that not asking for reviewers to rush through the game?
I spent way too much this month.. palworld, persona 3 reload, granblue fantasy relink and now this game and at the end of this ff7 rebirth. Cant wait to apologize to ppl on the mic when i aim my landing pod at their feet.
